Kodak 360orbit records more than 360VR
By Steven, 05/10/2017

I have been recording 360 video using Kodak 360Orbit for my leisure activities for eg, Golfing and travelling. I do find it is amazing to record video all around me. With its free Editing software “ PIXPRO 360 VR Suite “ , I could do several setting like Correction of stitching, improve or adjust its sharpness, contract, Brightness and colour saturation.

With all that it seems perfect for me. However this is not true till I realised comments made by my friends as viewer. They claimed that though the production of 360 VR video enable them to view all around , sadly they would not know where is the highlight of the video, searching up and down , left and right to look for something amazing , making them tired and make the 360 video less interesting, this is in particular in recording golf game

The difference between 360 and normal video is that, for 360, viewer choses the angle/ scene to view, while for normal video, the producer chose the scene or highlight for the viewer.

With this feedback, I come to realise what is a pleasant video and scene to be screened. And so what should I do with this Kodak 360 camcorder to produce the scene my friends wished. Thanks to the Kodak 360 built in feature named “Magic Flat” I found the answer. Magic Flat enable me to re-produce a normal video thru 360 recording.

It is to my surprise that although recording in 360 like what I had been doing, I can actually use the same free software “PIXPRO 360 VR Suite” to achieve it. (I mean normal video)

Not only that I could select the angle shot, I could do virtual pan and tilt video shot. You see this tiny and small camcorder can do such a amazing stuff. This can be done by selecting Magic Flat in the said editing software, you can do the same to adjust its same parameter like 360, Sharpness, Contract and etc., after the scene has been chosen.

When you hit the Button of “REC” during editing and having “View Operation” as “Record Operation” You are apparently producing a virtual pan and tilt of the cameras while you use your mouse to move the video. (Changing the angle/scene). It is just like you are having the cameras on tripod.

Thus to this end, I would like to share that, do not always think that 360 is used to produce VR360, you can produce a normal video after shot in 360. The beauty for screening in normal video is that there is no limitation of what video angle you can chose from within this Kodak Orbit 360 and yet producing astonishing video, you are not going to miss any scene or happening around it.

Please upgrade your Kodak ORBIT360 4k firmware to the latest version of 1.2. With this new update, you may now use powerbank ( output 5v) to replace the battery, thus enable you to do longer recording. This is idea for those who wish to conduct a short term 360 surveillance project. Also you may view the recorded footage via Wifi in your smartphone, allowing you to have quick review of the footage without using your PC.
